It has been a while since we last covered the NBA here at SBOTOP, and a lot has happened since then. First, the Knicks won their first Larry O’Brien trophy in 53 years after beating the Spurs in five games, and chaos ensued this offseason.
LeBron James shocked everyone when he announced he’s leaving the Lakers after an eight-year run, and the 41-year-old forward has become one of the hottest free agents in the market. On the other hand, several stars have switched teams, including Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown, who went to the Heat and Sixers, respectively.
The Eastern Conference landscape has been greatly affected by these moves, though the Knicks remain the favourites, per the NBA 2026 odds. However, New York’s margin for error seems a lot slimmer this time around.
Without further ado, here is a recap of some of the top NBA 2026 updates in the past few weeks.
James biding his time on his next destination
LeBron James fully controls his fate this offseason, as he has several options. First, he can retire from basketball for good, with nothing more to prove given his decorated resume. However, it feels like he’ll play out at least one more year before calling it quits since he loves the game so much. James’ agent, Rich Paul, has said that money won’t play a role in his client’s decision (since he already has a lot of it). Rather, James is prioritising winning his fifth career Larry O’Brien trophy.
The four-time league MVP and champion has been linked to several teams, such as the Warriors, Heat, Cavaliers, and Sixers, and these four teams offer something different to the table. Joining the Warriors would see James link up with Stephen Curry, with whom he has played well during the 2024 Olympics. Joining the Cavaliers (for the third time) is essentially a homecoming. Meanwhile, the Heat and Sixers have stacked lineups that could help the King chase another ring, albeit in a much lesser role, similar to his final season with the Lakers.
While some of his former teammates and associates already have a clue of where he’s going, James has yet to confirm what he’ll do next. Either way, any team would be lucky to have James (especially if he joins on a veteran minimum), given he can still play at a high level despite his advancing age.
Antetokounmpo officially unveiled by the Heat

The Heat finally unveiled Giannis Antetokounmpo as their newest star after acquiring him and Bobby Portis from the Bucks in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick of this summer’s NBA Draft (Nate Ament), and four future draft picks.
The Bucks put Antetokounmpo on the chopping block after a miserable 2025-26 campaign, and they listened to offers from the Heat and Celtics. Boston offered Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks for the Greek Freak, but Milwaukee ultimately went for the larger package. According to reports, Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam was not keen on taking in Brown in the first place.
Antetokounmpo revealed he’ll wear No. 7 instead of his usual No. 34 to keep his Bucks legacy intact. The two-time league MVP will team up with Bam Adebayo, forming one of the most fearsome frontcourt duos in the league. Portis, on the other hand, is a serviceable veteran who can space the floor. And while they’re at it, the team is also trying to recruit free agent LeBron James.
At 31, Miami clearly believe Antetokounmpo still has many good years left, and it’s presumed that by making this blockbuster deal, they’ll give him a massive contract extension later this year.
Blockbuster Brown trade draws mixed reactions
The Jaylen Brown-Jayson Tatum era is over in Boston, as the Celtics sent Brown to the Sixers (of all teams). In the shocking blockbuster trade, the Celtics acquired Paul George and four future draft picks, which is widely considered an underwhelming return.
Brown is coming off his best individual year, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists on 47.7-per cent shooting from the field across 71 regular-season appearances, leading the Celtics to the second seed before blowing a 3-1 series lead against the Sixers in the first round.
Brad Stevens has received a ton of backlash for the move because of what Brown meant for the community. However, during his press conference, the Celtics president indicated that they had to make the trade given their complex salary cap situation, especially with Brown projected to be eligible for a two-year, $142 million extension in the next few weeks.
