US Open: Pegula Out for Revenge in Blockbuster Semis Clash

Jessica Pegula continues to pursue her first career Grand Slam, and she has a chance to achieve it here at the 2025 US Open. The world No. 4 is already through to the semi-finals after breezing past opponents in the first five rounds, and she’s up against a familiar foe in her next match.

The next person standing in her way is Aryna Sabalenka, setting up a rematch of last year’s final. The pre-game US Open 2025 odds predict a close fight between these two, with Sabalenka having the slight advantage.

On the other side of the bracket, Iga Swiatek and Amanda Anisimova will face off in the quarter-finals in what will be a rematch of July’s Wimbledon final. And then, Naomi Osaka received a huge confidence boost following her latest victory in the Round of 16.

Check out the latest US Open 2025 updates on the women’s side, courtesy of today’s SBOTOP recap.

No love lost between Pegula and Sabalenka

Jessica Pegula came to her home Grand Slam looking like a woman on a mission, as she hasn’t dropped a set in the first five rounds. She just reached the second major semi-final of her career, following a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Barbora Krejcikova yesterday.

Pegula, who came into Flushing Meadows having lost four of her past six matches, is bidding to become the third American woman this year to win a major after Madison Keys at the Australian Open and Coco Gauff at Roland Garros. Amanda Anisimova also reached the Wimbledon final before losing to Iga Swiatek. She has a 2-7 head-to-head record against Aryna Sabalenka, and Pegula has lost her last three meetings against the world No. 1, including the Miami Open earlier this year, 7-5, 6-2.

Speaking of Sabalenka, she caught a lucky break in the previous round, as her quarter-finals win over Marketa Vondrousova was a walkover. Vondrousova had to retire due to a knee injury, and this is Sabalenka’s first time advancing to the next round in a major via retirement. Before this, the Belarusian international secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Cristina Bucsa in the Round of 16.

Swiatek and Anisimova to run it back

Amanda Anisimova will aim to exorcise her demons against Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals of the 2025 US Open. The American international was a mess when she last met her Polish counterpart, as Anisimova didn’t win a single game in the 57-minute title match at the Wimbledon final, so she hopes to make it more competitive this time.

“Who would’ve thought we’d meet again so soon?” Anisimova said ahead of her rematch against Swiatek. “I’m super excited. It’s going to be a great match… I hope this time.”

Before reaching the quarter-finals for the first time, Anisimova’s US Open results were quite disappointing, as three of her previous five appearances in Flushing Meadows ended in the first round, with the others reaching the second and third rounds. The 24-year-old is brimming with confidence heading into the final eight, as she brushed aside Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-0, 6-3 on Monday.

Meanwhile, Swiatek secured a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova yesterday. The world No. 2 has won 18 of her past 19 matches and claimed the Wimbledon and Cincinnati titles, although her first week in New York had not been smooth sailing. Swiatek was stretched to three sets by Suzan Lamens, and she had to overturn a 5-1 first-set deficit to beat Anna Kalinskaya.

Osaka scores massive upset against Gauff

Naomi Osaka secured a decisive 6-3, 6-2 win over Coco Gauff in 64 minutes on Monday to reach her first major quarter-final since the 2021 Australian Open. It was reminiscent of the memorable match between the two here six years ago, as Osaka won 6-3, 6-0 against a much younger Gauff in the third round. Back then, Osaka was at the peak of her powers, while Gauff just turned 15.

The Japanese international weathered long rallies and played with a sunny disposition, as she won 16 of the 24 rallies that went five shots or more. Osaka also converted each of the four break points she earned, as Gauff, who had 20 unforced errors, struggled with her service game and forehand.

Up next for Osaka is Karolina Muchova, who advanced with a 6-3, 6-7 (0), 6-3 victory over world No. 27 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine. Muchova, the world No. 13 in the live WTA rankings, was responsible for booting out Osaka in the second round at Flushing Meadows last year.
