Paris Masters: Djokovic Withdraws as He Needs a Pause

The 2025 Paris Masters is less than a week away, and it looks to be another fun one, considering the star-studded playing field. Top seeds Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are expected to be among the participants, looking to win their first.

Alexander Zverev is the defending champion of this prestigious competition, following his straight-sets triumph over Ugo Humbert last year. However, the early Paris Masters 2025 odds don’t expect a repeat from the German international because of his inconsistent recent form.

On the other hand, Novak Djokovic is the biggest omission of this tournament, as he announced that he wouldn’t be joining. Fans are in the dark about the seven-time Paris Masters champion, but it looks like he’s managing his load ahead of the next few weeks. Jack Draper, Frances Tiafoe, and Holger Rune (also a former champion) have also withdrawn due to injuries.

Djokovic is fighting against Father Time

Many tennis fans were disappointed when Novak Djokovic announced on social media that he would withdraw from this year’s Paris Masters.

“Dear Paris, unfortunately, I’ll not compete at this year’s @RolexPMasters. I have amazing memories and great success over the years, especially being able to conquer the title 7 times. Hope to see you next year. Merci,” Djokovic wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The Serb’s announcement came days after he competed in the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia last weekend. It was a lucrative exhibition event that featured the top five players in the ATP division. After receiving a first-round bye, Djokovic lost 6-4, 6-2 to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals before retiring in the third-place match against Taylor Fritz after dropping the first set.

A week earlier, Djokovic had been knocked out in the Shanghai Masters semi-finals by the surprising tournament winner, Valentin Vacherot. It was revealed that the 38-year-old had been playing through a sore hip to reach the last four in China. So far this season, he has reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open.

The 2025 Paris Masters would’ve been the perfect way for Djokovic to tack on more points and warm up for the ATP Finals next month. Instead, he’ll use this time to recharge his batteries since Djokovic doesn’t want to skip the season-ending tournament for the second straight year.

Zverev hopeful to regain form

With inconsistent recent form, Alexander Zverev isn’t favoured to retain his Paris Masters crown

Alexander Zverev has qualified for the ATP Finals because he is the third-seeded player in the ATP rankings. However, he’s unlikely to challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the top anytime soon because of the huge gap between them. Since reaching the Stuttgart Open final and notching back-to-back semi-final appearances in Canada and Cincinnati, Zverev has never advanced past the quarter-finals of any tournament.

After an early exit in the Shanghai Masters earlier this month, the 28-year-old German is back at it in the Vienna Open (where he has won before in 2021), having just survived a three-set thriller (6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5)) against Jacob Fearnley earlier today.

Zverev and Fearnley exchanged the opening two sets, but the latter pushed the former to the limit in the final set. The only break chance of the final set doubled as match point for Zverev at 5-4, but Fearnley bounced back. Undeterred by Fearnley’s challenge, Zverev never trailed in the tie-break and sealed the deal on his fourth match point.

Up next for Zverev is Matteo Arnaldi, with whom he has a 2-0 record. If Zverev wins a couple more matches, he could see Jannik Sinner in the final.

Alcaraz and Sinner to play tug-of-war

Carlos Alcaraz is back as the ATP’s top seed after he built a commanding cushion, following a surge in form. After winning his first Monte-Carlo Masters title in April, the 22-year-old used the momentum to win a Tour-leading eight titles, including two Grand Slams at Roland Garros and the US Open.

This is probably the reason why Sinner is pushing hard to win this year’s Vienna Open. If the Italian wins the said event, he would gain 500 points on Alcaraz, who is not in action. If Sinner fails to win in Vienna, he would trail by 2,540 points entering the Paris Masters. At that point, even with victories in Paris and Turin, Sinner would be 40 points short of Alcaraz’s current 11,040.

Both men are pursuing their second ATP Year-End No. 1, with Alcaraz last doing so in 2022 and Sinner doing so last year.
