Premier League: Have Spurs Hit the Jackpot with Frank?

Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Thomas Frank as their new manager, following in the footsteps of Ange Postecoglou as the seventh man to lead Spurs in the last six years.

Frank spent seven years at Brentford, which made him the second longest serving manager in the English top flight, and now he’s once again the newest…for a short while I suspect. The 51 year old Dane has signed a three year contract and Spurs fans will be hoping he is the man to deliver progress, more silverware and maybe even help them climb out of the shadow of North London rivals Arsenal.

In is seven seasons with the Bees Frank led them to the Premier League in 2021, the club’s first top flight campaign since 1947 and the skilful way he built a competitive team and coached them, with great tactical nous and intellect, has been admired by many clubs with bigger resources… as well as we SBOTOP football fans. Brentford have finished in the top ten twice in four seasons, including a tenth place in 2024/25. But maybe Frank is ready for a new challenge; and he has everything in his locker to succeed, the one missing part of the jigsaw is that he has never managed a club with such huge pressure and a weight of expectation.

But Frank always comes across as a cool customer, unflappable under pressure and he may just be the calming influence the Tottenham players need to thrive.

Postecoglou delivered a first piece of silverware to Spurs in 17 years as the Whites beat Manchester United to win the 2025 Europa League. The affable Aussie can leave the club with his head held high but the powers that be at the North London club had their minds made up after a 17th placed finish in the Premier League. Postecoglou’s attractive brand of football, not to mention his trophy breakthrough at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, have received great acclaim and he won’t be short of offers, with Saudi Pro League champions Al Ahli reported to be considering a move.

Premier League: Bryan Mbeumo is expected to follow Thomas Frank to the Tottenham Hotspur
Bryan Mbeumo finished the 2024-25 season as Premier League’s 4th top scorer

It must have been a wrench for Frank to leave Brentford where he was much loved by players and fans alike but maybe, in a world where successful small clubs find it devilishly difficult to keep hold of their best players, he may be wondering whether he has taken the Bees as far as he can, and he prefers to leave on a high. Frank is a man of great integrity but he is also a realist and clubs are already circling around Brentford’s star striker Bryan Mbeumo, including Manchester United. Now the Cameroon star may well be tempted to join his old boss at his new club… he wouldn’t have to make a house move if he joins Spurs, but commuting from London to Manchester is out of the question; and with Champions League football also on offer Tottenham must be an attractive option for Mbeumo.

In other Premier League 2025 news the club has already made its first full signing of the summer, recruiting forward Mathys Tel on a six year contract, after he spent the second of last season on loan from Bayern Munich to Spurs. The French star struggled to make a big impact, scoring two goals in 13 Premier League games, but at 20 years of age there is plenty of time and room for improvement and Frank is a renowned nurturer of young talent. The Dane will inherit some high class players, many of which underperformed last season and if he can do his man-management magic Frank could have a really competitive team on his hands; certainly one which can finish ahead of Brentford!

Attacking midfielder James Maddison was consistent for much of last season and he might respond well to Champions League football and a new erudite coach, while Brennan Johnson was also up to the task for much of the campaign. Experienced stars such as Rodrigo Bentancur, Micky Van de Ven and Heung-Min Son can be relied on, and Frank has the attributes to develop the young players including Tel, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert.

He will be joined by some of his Brentford crew, including assistant coach Justin Cochrane, and Frank will know which team Spurs will line up against first when the 2025/26 Premier League fixtures come out on Wednesday. When the campaign starts you can be sure Frank will have his team ready and it will be fascinating to see how quickly he can make his mark, in domestic competition and the Champions League.

The Premier League 2025 predictions will start to appear very soon and exciting times may well be ahead for Spurs fans; and they have already shed the monkey of failing to win trophies, off their back. This could be the perfect match at the perfect time.
