Premier League: Fulham’s Brutal Run Continues on Tyneside

Newcastle United vs Fulham

Marco Silva’s Fulham head to Newcastle on Saturday, hoping to end a run of three consecutive defeats when they meet Eddie Howe’s upwardly flying Magpies.

The Geordies were in Champions League action in midweek, at home to Benfica on Tuesday night, and they came through impressively, winning 3-0 thanks to a brace from Harvey Barnes and a third from Anthony Gordon.

But this Premier League game is a clash between two teams looking to pick up momentum in the league. After a bright start to the campaign, the Cottagers have lost the last three, falling 1-0 at home to Arsenal last weekend, and the Magpies too were empty-handed, going down by the odd goal in three away to Brighton.

After facing three of the top-flight’s in-form clubs, the Cottagers now meet another confident outfit, and the Premier League 2025 betting odds say Silva’s men are in for another tough afternoon.

Talking Points

Newcastle’s wing wizards can cause havoc

Newcastle United are determined to continue their fine form when they go against Fulham in the Premier League

After a difficult transfer window and a sketchy start to the season, the Magpies seem to have found their feet and are beginning to gather some nice momentum in terms of both the Premier League and in Europe.

Newcastle opened their return to Champions League football with a box office tie against Barcelona, and fell to a 2-1 defeat, with Gordon grabbing the Geordies’ goal. But they followed that up with a brilliant 4-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise, with Gordon and Barnes again on the scoresheet. And in Wednesday’s win over Benfica, Jacob Murphy got in on the act with an assist, as the Magpies recorded back-to-back Champions League wins for the first time in 22 years.

With Joe Willock and Anthony Elanga also in the group and summer signing Yoanne Wissa still to make his entrance, this is a creative group which will give full-backs nightmares, with six top-class wide men ready to hit the flanks or cut inside. And they all like to take a pot at goal, with Gordon and Barnes showing great success recently.

One of the chief beneficiaries will be Nick Woltemade, the 6’6” recruit from VfB Stuttgart, who has already scored four goals in five appearances, sticking a penalty away in a recent 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest with supreme confidence. And with a midfield three of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton, the Germany star will never be short of ammunition.

Fulham just need a break

After beginning the season with two consecutive draws, Silva’s team were on the end of a ridiculous VAR performance when they lost 2-0 to Chelsea. They recovered with back-to-back league wins over Leeds United and Brentford. But then, to face Aston Villa, just when Unai Emery’s side began to click and is now on a three-match winning run, third-placed Bournemouth and leaders Arsenal could hardly have been a harsher sequence.

The Premier League table doesn’t lie. And after eight games, Fulham are in 15th place, three points above the drop zone. These are early days, but for a club aiming to improve on last season’s 11th-place finish, now would be a good time to turn things around.

The Cottagers’ clash with Arsenal was no easy ride for the table-topping Gunners, who had to rely on another set-piece goal, a Bukayo Saka corner flicked on by Gabriel and bundled in at the far post by Leandro Trossard. Fulham saw plenty of the ball in a tight game and had nine shots, but they had no breaks in front of goal.

With Harry Wilson, Josh King, and Alex Iwobi all supporting veteran Raul Jimenez, this is a team that can entertain and pack a punch, so I expect the Premier League 2025 highlights to be well worth a watch. Silva wants to make sure his team not only stretches the Magpies but also doesn’t come away empty-handed for the fourth week in succession.

History

The head-to-head results between Newcastle United and Fulham could not be closer, with each winning 16 of the last 37 encounters, while five matches have ended in a draw.

Last season, the Cottagers did the double in this fixture, with a 3-1 win at Craven Cottage followed by a 2-1 success on Tyneside. But the Magpies won the previous four meetings and come into this match with better form, winning four of the last six and drawing two, while Fulham have won three and lost three in all competitions.

Betting Tip

The Magpies are hot favourites at SBOTOP odds of 1.58 to win this game, with Fulham at 5.50, and the draw is priced at 3.80. It promises to be an entertaining bout, and Fulham will try to give as good as they get.

I predict goals, and for an alternative bet, a 2-2 draw at odds of 14.00 would be a decent outcome for the Cottagers.
