Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal went four points clear at the top of the Premier League after a goal from Eberechi Eze gave the Gunners a vital win over the match-winner’s former team.
Crystal Palace made a strong start to the campaign but just a single point from their last three games has seen them drop to tenth place after another action packed weekend of top flight football. As Arsenal dominated the game, a dink into the penalty area fell to Eze and he hit the sweetest first time shot to send the fans at the Emirates wild and the Eagles home empty handed.
The Premier League 2025 betting odds have taken a sharp turn towards north London after a great weekend for Arteta and his men. While they did the business to beat Palace there was a defeat for Manchester City who went to down to a brilliant Matty Cash strike away to Aston Villa. While the Sky Blues stay fourth, the Villans are up to seventh place thanks a four match winning run.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth’s incredible start to the season continued as Sean Dyche suffered defeat in his first match as Nottingham Forest head coach, while Dyche’s former club Burnley edged a five goal thriller away to bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers. And in the late Sunday kick-off Spurs won away to Everton to move third.
On Saturday, Manchester United’s revival continues with a 4-2 win over Brighton and Hove Albion and Newcastle United edged out Fulham 2-1, while on Friday West Ham United’s woes continued with a 2-1 loss away to Leeds United.
And there was more incredible drama at the top end of the table…
Liverpool lose again
Arne Slot’s expensively assembled Liverpool are making a hash of their title defence, falling to a fourth consecutive league defeat, and this time away to Keith Andrews’ Brentford, who moved away from the relegation zone with a well earned victory.

The impressive Bees went after the Reds from the off and were ahead when a missile of a long throw, hurled in by Michael Kayode, was flicked on by Kristoffer Ajer and turned in by Dango Ouattara. Brentford went two up when Mikkel Damsgaard played in Kevin Schade and the in form striker fired home. Milos Kerkez halved the deficit, unbelievably in the fifth minute of three added on, and the referee, Simon Hooper, was replaced at half time by the fourth official, Tim Robinson. The sub ref was in on the action when he awarded a penalty to Brentford after a VAR review on a foul by Virgil Van Dijk on Outtara, and Igor Thiaga calmly slammed the spot-kick home. A chunk of the £446m spent by Slot in the summer went on German winger Florian Wirtz who is still awaiting his first goal, though he came close to breaking his duck. And although Mo Salah pulled a late goal back with a well hit volley, Liverpool ended up on the wrong end of an entertaining 3-2.
With Premier League 2025 results like this the Reds can say goodbye to their title, and they have even slipped below one of the newly promoted clubs… as well as Manchester United.
Blacks Cats up to fourth
Here’s a sub headline this SBOTOP writer never envisaged, and nor did anyone outside Teeside I suspect. But, nine games into the new season, that’s exactly where Sunderland find themselves, after pulling off a stunning 2-1 win away to Chelsea. The Blues came into the game on the back of four consecutive victories and they took an early lead on Saturday, as winger Alejandro Garnacho scored his first league goal for Chelsea.
Long throws have made a return to the Premier League this season and Sunderland’s Nordi Mukiele has one of the most destructive, and his caused chaos when he hurled a throw into the Chelsea penalty area, and Wilson Isidor silenced the home crowd when he tapped the ball in. Chelsea worked to find another opening but when the chances came they couldn’t beat Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs and, as the frustration grew in the stadium, the Blues began to labour and were hit by a sucker punch when Chemsdine Talbi rolled home a 93rd minute winner.
Regis de Bris’ Black Cats are in dreamland. Admittedly they have had a relatively gentle fixture list to welcome them back to the top flight, starting with a 3-0 win over West Ham United. While they have ridden their luck at times Sunderland have picked up five victories. To beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge shows just what they are capable of and the newcomers have already given themselves a superb chance to avoid a drop back to the second tier.
