La Liga: Atleti are Making a Run at the Top

Getafe vs Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid are among the most in-form teams in La Liga, as Los Rojiblancos were on a four-game winning streak before the November international break. Diego Simeone’s men will aim to make it five in a row when they visit Getafe at the Estadio Coliseum on Sunday evening.

Los Rojiblancos are currently fourth in the Spanish top-flight standings with 25 points, six points behind leaders Real Madrid, who also had a four-game winning streak not too long ago.

Getafe are four notches below Atletico Madrid with 17 points. Geta Azulones’ form is mixed compared to Atleti, as they’ve won only two of their last four matches. Jose Bordalas’ side is coming off a 1-0 defeat against Mallorca last time out.

But the hosts will fancy their chances on Sunday, as they’ve lost only once on home soil thus far, while the visitors’ away form leaves much to be desired. Read more below for the SBOTOP preview of this contest.

Talking Points

Getafe have Top 10 quality

Getafe manager Jose Bordalas looks on ahead of the La Liga clash with Barcelona at the Johan Cruyff Stadium

Following a 13th-place finish in the Spanish top-flight last term, Getafe should aim for a top-half finish this year with the quality of their current squad. During the summer transfer window, Geta Azulones were one of the most productive teams, as they brought in numerous reinforcements.

Adrian Liso and Mario Martin have proven to be loan bargains for Getafe, as the two youngsters are among the team’s top scorers, combining for five league goals thus far. They have formed a strong partnership with Borja Mayoral, who leads the team with four league goals and one assist, in the final third.

Mauro Arambarri, Juan Iglesias, and Christantus Uche have also found the back of the net, while veteran playmaker Luis Milla already has six assists under his belt.

Because Getafe only play once a week, manager Jose Bordalas doesn’t have a big injury list. Geta Azulones will be without the services of only two players through injury on Sunday, as Davinchi and Yvan Neyou are unavailable for selection. They will bank on their home record to try to upset Atletico Madrid again.

Atletico Madrid must improve on the road

In contrast, Atletico Madrid have been disappointing on the road this term, recording only one win from their five such matches, which was a 2-0 result against Real Betis last month.

Additionally, unlike Getafe, they have more key players on the injury list ahead of Sunday. Robin Le Normand is not expected to play due to a knee injury, while Giuliano Simeone and Jan Oblak are major doubts for Los Rojiblancos. Should Oblak be unavailable for selection, then Atletico Madrid have a quality replacement in Juan Musso.

Antoine Griezmann regained his scoring touch before the international break, having scored three goals against Sevilla and Levante. The Frenchman could join Julian Alvarez, their leading scorer with seven league goals and two assists, up front on Sunday.

History

Getafe and Atletico Madrid met three times last season, with the latter notching two wins and the former winning their most recent encounter.

Atletico Madrid won 1-0 last December 2024, as Alexander Sorloth scored the second-half winner. They followed it up with a 5-0 win in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, as Giuliano Simeone (brace), Samuel Lino, Angel Correa, and Alexander Sorloth were on the scoresheet. However, they eventually lost to Barcelona in the next round (5-4 on aggregate).

Getafe won 2-1 at this exact fixture last term, as Mauro Arambarri’s brace overturned a one-goal deficit created by Sorloth, and Atletico Madrid were reduced to 10 men after Correa received a late red card. It was their first win over Los Rojiblancos since November 2011, and they’ll be aiming for consecutive wins over them for the first time since 2010.

Betting Tip

The La Liga 2025 odds expect Atletico Madrid to improve their away record at the expense of Getafe. Atletico Madrid are 1.79 favourites to win, whereas Getafe are 4.46 underdogs, and a draw is valued at 3.13 in the 1X2 market.

Both teams can make it to this weekend’s La Liga 2025 highlights reel. With that said, bettors may also consider adding Over 1.75 at 1.62, Over 2.00 at 1.94, Over 2.25 at 2.19, and Total Goal 2-3 at 1.91 to the parlay.

However, if you fancy Geta Azulones’ chances of another Los Rojiblancos upset, check out the Correct Score of 2-1 in their favour – the result of their previous league encounter – as it is valued at a whopping 19.00 your bet.
