Champions League: Eredivisie Leaders Will Make it Hard for the Unrecognisable Reds

Liverpool vs PSV

Liverpool aim to return to winning ways when they face PSV on Wednesday for their next Champions League match at Anfield. While they’ve been struggling in the Premier League, they are doing better in Europe, with three wins after the opening four matchdays (L1).

Arne Slot’s Reds scored a 1-0 win over Real Madrid earlier this month to maintain their top-half position in the Champions League standings. However, after that, they were unable to sustain their momentum with back-to-back league losses against Manchester City (3-0) and Nottingham Forest (3-0).

Meanwhile, PSV’s Champions League 2025 results have been mixed so far, with one win, two draws, and one loss. With five points, Peter Bosz’s men are 18th in the standings. Since their 1-1 draw against Olympiacos, PSV recorded consecutive league wins over AZ Alkmaar (5-1) and NAC (1-0).

Talking Points

Lineup conundrum for Liverpool

Liverpool’s latest league defeat against Nottingham Forest reminded us that Arne Slot’s squad is dysfunctional. For the first time since April 1965, the Reds have conceded three goals in consecutive league games. Even the return of Alisson Becker between the sticks couldn’t prevent this disaster.

Milos Kerkez looks out of his depth trying to fill in for Andy Robertson, while Dominik Szoboszlai is playing as a right-back – not his best position on the pitch. On the other hand, Mohamed Salah is a shadow of the player who finished fourth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting, and Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz continue to struggle.

Head coach Arne Slot might mix it up in the final third against PSV by replacing Isak with Hugo Ekitike, who’ll join Cody Gakpo and Salah. Salah, who has not netted in three straight games across all competitions, is expected to be aggressive against the Dutch Eredivisie leaders, as he is two goals away from becoming the first African player to reach a half-century of Champions League goals.

Wirtz will likely stay on the bench in favour of Alexis Mac Allister. The Reds will continue to miss the services of Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, and Szoboszlai could continue as a makeshift full-back.

Til excelling in makeshift role with PSV

PSV will fancy their chances against the vulnerable Reds, as they’re unbeaten in their last 11 matches across all competitions. In their last two Dutch Eredivisie matches, Peter Bosz’s men have plundered six goals while conceding only one on the other end.

Guus Til has accounted for four goals during this stretch, including a hat-trick against AZ Alkmaar two weeks ago. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder, who already has nine league goals this term, will likely continue as the team’s makeshift No. 9, considering his current form.

Ismael Salbari, Joey Veerman, and Ricardo Pepi, who combine for 16 league goals, will provide support for Til. The only notable absences for PSV are Ruben van Bommel and Alassane Plea.

History

Wednesday marks the eighth Champions League encounter between Liverpool and PSV. As expected, the Reds have a superior head-to-head record with five wins, and PSV have one win and one draw. However, Liverpool’s historical edge may count for little this time around.

PSV secured their first win in this fixture during the league phase last season, notching a 3-2 victory over Liverpool in January at the Philips Stadium. Johan Bakayoko, Ismael Salbari, and Ricardo Pepi scored for the hosts, while Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott scored for the 10-man Reds.

Liverpool finished at the top of the table to advance to the Round of 16, while PSV barely made it to the knockout phase play-offs. The Reds lost to eventual champions PSG right away (4-1 on aggregate), while PSV lost to Juventus (4-3 on aggregate).

Betting Tip

The Champions League 2025 odds expect Liverpool to maintain their superb form in Europe this week. The Reds are 1.30 favourites to win, whereas PSV are 6.70 underdogs, and a draw is valued at 4.96 in the 1X2 market. Given the hosts’ recent form, this game is not a sure win for them.

Clean sheets are a rarity in this fixture, so football fans and bettors can expect a high-scoring affair at Anfield on Wednesday. Besides our recommended bet, bettors may also consider adding Over 3.25 at 1.67, Over 3.75 at 2.09, and Total Goals 4-6 at 2.13 to the parlay. Furthermore, a Correct Score of 3-2 in favour of the Reds – the result of their previous game – is on a staggering offer of 19.50 your bet.
