Bundesliga: Winner Takes All When Freiburg Meet Frankfurt

SC Freiburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Fourth hosts third at the Europa Park Stadion on Saturday when the Bundesliga match between SC Freiburg and RB Leipzig is the highest stakes match in the German top-flight.

The Bundesliga title has already gone to Bayern Munich, and 2024 champions Bayer Leverkusen are confirmed runners up. Then there are three teams contesting the next two Champions League places, Julian Schuster’s SC Freiburg and Dino Toppmoller’s Eintracht Frankfurt among them, and Borussia Dortmund the third.

Die Schwarzgelben, in fifth, one point behind Freiburg and three behind Eintracht, are at home to Holstein Kiel on Saturday and at SBOTOP odds of 1.09 to win. So, while a draw would actually be enough for the Eagles to take their top four place, Freiburg almost certainly need a victory.

The hosts come into the game on the back of a 2-1 win away to Kiel, while Frankfurt stumbled to a 2-2 draw at home to St. Pauli, and the Bundesliga 2025 betting odds say we are in for a cracker on Saturday, at 2:30 pm local time.

But for the fans of these two teams, it will be a nail-biting 90 plus minutes.

Talking Points

Freiburg can make history

Freiburg can’t afford to settle for a draw in their Bundesliga clash with Frankfurt
Freiburg boss Julian Schuster gestures during a Bundesliga clash against Mainz

Schuster’s men have fought tooth and nail to keep their Champions League hopes alive, picking up three wins on the bounce against Borussia Monchengladbach, TSG Hoffenheim, and Wolfsburg before leading Bayer Leverkusen 2-0, only to be pegged back to a draw late in the game. And last week, they fought from behind to pick up a crucial three points away to Holstein Kiel, as Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi levelled before the break and forward Lucas Holer planted home a second half header to win the game while relegating Kiel in the process.

Freiburg aim to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their 121-year history, and they can only be caught by BVB. But it could have been so much better had Bayer Leverkusen put up a better fight against Die Schwarzgelben last week as Dortmund plundered a 4-2 win at the BayArena. Had Die Werkself still been in the title race, that would probably have been a very different game, but Freiburg must do it for themselves now and win their fifth league game in six.

Ritsu Doan, with nine goals and seven assists, and winger Vincenzo Grifo, with eight goals and 11 assists, will do all they can to cut open the Eintracht defence, but they face a team with a clear objective to keep them out.

Frankfurt must hold their nerve

The Eagles have been the third best team in the top-flight for some time, and they have been knocking on the door of the Champions League, but it still won’t open. Knowing a win last week at home to lowly St. Pauli would confirm their third place, Frankfurt came out all guns blazing and they went ahead in their first attack of the game, as Rasmus Kristensen scored his second goal in two games. But the strugglers fought back to lead 2-1, leaving Michy Batshuayi to rescue a point on 71 minutes.

The Eagles’ clash with FSV Mainz the previous week was another chance to cement their top four spot, but a 1-1 draw followed by the point against St. PauIi leaves them still with work to do when they have been so close to confirming their Champions League place for some weeks.

Frankfurt have quality running through their team, from skipper Kevin Trapp in the goals to striker Hugo Ekitike, who has 15 goals from 31 games and has now matched Omar Marmoush, who transferred to Manchester City in the January window. And another player to watch is 21-year-old left-back, Nathaniel Brown, who has made eight assists.

They have the players that can create Bundesliga 2025 highlights, but can the Eagles hold their nerve?

History

With 19 wins to 15, Eintracht have had the better of the head-to-heads, but this relationship has always been competitive. And when the two teams met here last season, it ended in a 3-3 draw.

But the Eagles hammered Freiburg in January when they came together in Frankfurt as Ekitike was on target in a 4-1 victory and Doan scored Freiburg’s consolation.

Both are in strong form with just a single defeat from the last six games, but Freiburg are unbeaten in their last five and have won four of those, while Frankfurt have won two and drawn three of their last six.

Betting Tip

Freiburg are the marginal favourites to win this huge clash at odds of 2.25 and Frankfurt are priced at 2.58, and I’m finding it hard to split these two teams which are both so close to the Champions League.

Freiburg need a win to guarantee qualification but, while unlikely, a point might just do. And a 1-1 draw is the most likely outcome at a price of 6.95, with 2-2 at 10.60.
