England haven’t won a major prize since winning the World Cup in 1966, when Queen Elizabeth was approaching her 40s. Since then, the Three Lions have had their share of disappointments in the biggest competitions, despite having the strongest teams on paper, and they hope to avoid the same fate this time around.
After sticking with Sir Gareth Southgate for almost a decade, England decided to go the unconventional route by hiring Thomas Tuchel as their head coach for the World Cup 2026. Tuchel may be one of the best tacticians in club football, but this is the German’s first foray into international football.
Just like in previous editions, England are listed as one of the early favourites to win the World Cup because of their strong contingent. However, their fans back home won’t care about the SBOTOP World Cup 2026 odds, as they’re seeking results. The Three Lions face a tough journey ahead, but they’ll have to go through it to win the biggest prize.
Tuchel is scrutinised for questionable call-ups
Thomas Tuchel recently confirmed his full squad for the World Cup, and the German was criticised for some of his lineup selections. This was inevitable because of their wide talent pool compared to other nations.
There have been 11 notable snubs in this year’s lineup. Aaron Ramsdale, Lewis Hall, Levi Colwill, Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Adam Wharton, James Garner, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Jarrod Bowen understandably have the right to be disappointed.
Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson, John Stones, Noni Madueke, and Ivan Toney were called up despite doing worse than some of the snubs. Henderson is getting up there in age, and Wharton’s younger legs would’ve added to their midfield engine room. Stones had been dealing with injuries all season, and Maguire or Fikayo Tomori were healthier. Madueke only averaged one goal per 567 minutes in the Premier League this term. And Ivan Toney is playing in the Saudi Pro League, unlike Calvert-Lewin.
Meanwhile, Foden’s exclusion is warranted due to his subpar production this year, while Alexander-Arnold hasn’t been at his best at Real Madrid. Kyle Walker recently retired from international duty. Hall Palmer, and Wharton will certainly get their chances in the near future.
England have the requisite firepower
With Thomas Tuchel as the head coach, England are expected to have a more proactive approach, unlike Sir Gareth Southgate. As always, Harry Kane will spearhead their charge, as he is the Three Lions’ skipper and all-time leading scorer, with 78 goals and 112 caps. He just led Bayern Munich to their second consecutive Bundesliga championship, winning his second Golden Boot trophy in the process after registering 36 league goals. We expect him to feature heavily in the World Cup 2026 highlights reel.

Besides Kane, opposing backlines will also have to worry about Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Anthony Gordon on the wings, while Ollie Watkins will be the backup No. 9 behind Kane.
Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson will form a solid midfield trio due to their combination of power, creativity, and hustle. Morgan Rogers and Kobbie Mainoo are additional creative hubs, while Eberechi Eze can also play as a winger.
Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa should start at centre-half, with Reece James and Nico O’Reilly as the full-backs. O’Reilly was named the Premier League Young Player of the Season, as the 21-year-old has been a revelation for Manchester City. Jordan Pickford, at 82 caps, is England’s most experienced goalkeeper, and he’ll have Dean Henderson and James Trafford as his understudies.
But England’s path is not straightforward
England’s World Cup journey will start in Group L, where they’ll face Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. Despite their strong squad, Thomas Tuchel’s men have no room for complacency, especially against Croatia and Ghana.
Croatia are packed with grizzled veterans, and they’ve eliminated England before in the knockouts. The Three Lions will also have to deal with Ghana’s athleticism, with Inaki Williams, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Jordan Ayew, and Antoine Semenyo leading the charge. Panama, meanwhile, are eager to make some noise in their first finals.
Assuming they take the top spot in Group I, they will face the top third-place team from Group C, D, F, G, or H, which could mean a Round of 32 meeting against Scotland, United States, Sweden, Iran, or Saudi Arabia. The scorching weather might also prove to be a major hurdle, since England are used to playing in the cold.
England have a few more days to prepare, and they flew to Miami on Monday evening to begin their 10-day hot weather acclimatisation camp.
