Bundesliga: There’s a Youth Revolution at the Red Bull Arena

Two of the youngest Bundesliga teams will square off this weekend, as RB Leipzig host Eintracht Frankfurt at Red Bull Arena on Saturday evening.

RB Leipzig are undefeated in their last two games but have dropped points in their last match against Borussia Monchengladbach. Ole Werner’s men remain in second place with 26 points but are eight points adrift of Bayern Munich, who have a winnable match against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. The hosts must win this game, given their slender cushion in the Top 4, to catch up with the Bavarians and keep the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, and Hoffenheim at bay.

Eintracht Frankfurt are five notches below RB Leipzig. Dino Toppmoller’s side is unbeaten in their last six league games and has 21 points, putting them only one point behind the European football places.

RB Leipzig have a diamond in Diomande

Yan Diomande is turning into a key player for RB Leipzig this season. Since he has seized a spot in the starting XI, the 19-year-old winger never looked back, getting the nod in all four games in November and playing the full 90 minutes twice.

He is one of the nominees for the Bundesliga Player and Rookie of the Month for November after scoring twice for the Red Bulls and forcing an own goal against VfB Stuttgart. Beyond his goals, Diomande showed off his impeccable work rate, having contested more challenges (108) than any other Bundesliga player, winning an outstanding 57-per cent of them.

And it’s not just in attack where the Red Bulls are profiting from their youth.  Castello Lukeba is establishing himself as a vital piece in the backline, forming a strong partnership with veteran centre-back Willi Orban. The 22-year-old defender has been RB Leipzig’s best tackler this term, winning 68-per cent of his duels.

While he’s not exactly young like Diomande and Lukeba, Christoph Baumgartner continues to set an example for RB Leipzig. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder carried his team past FC Magdeburg yesterday to reach the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals by bagging a brace.

 

Eintracht Frankfurt sweating on Burkardt’s fitness

Eintracht Frankfurt were lucky to salvage a point against VfL Wolfsburg, as Michy Batshuayi came off the bench and scored the stoppage-time equaliser. Die Adler were not clinical enough in the final third, as they were without their best scorer, Jonathan Burkardt. Burkardt was on the sidelines after sustaining a calf injury against Atalanta last Wednesday, and Eintracht Frankfurt fans are expecting him to be out for some time.

Losing him is a massive blow, as Burkardt is their top scorer with eight league goals, putting him second behind Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane in the Golden Boot race. Without Burkardt, Die Adler will need more from Can Uzun, Ritsu Doan, Ansgar Knauff, and Jean-Matteo Bahoya.

As mentioned, RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt are two of the youngest teams in the Bundesliga right now, with the former averaging 24.8 years and the latter 25.2 years.

These two teams split their league meetings last term. RB Leipzig won 2-1 at home in December 2024, as Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda cancelled out Nathaniel Brown’s goal. However, Eintracht Frankfurt retaliated with a 4-0 victory in the reverse fixture in April 2025, as Ansgar Knauff (brace), Hugo Ekitike, and Robin Koch were on the scoresheet.

Eintracht Frankfurt must be wary of RB Leipzig, who have been rock-solid at home this season. The Red Bulls have conceded just 13 goals in 12 league games so far this term, including a league-low three across five games at Red Bull Arena.
