Pisa will join Sassuolo back in Serie A after taking one of the Top 2 spots in the Serie B table this 2024-25 campaign. Sassuolo finished first with 82 points, and Pisa were right behind them with 76 points – a 10-point cushion over third-seeded Spezia.
While seeing Sassuolo back in the Italian top-flight is normal, the same can’t be said for Pisa, which had to wait 34 years to return. Their last Serie A match came against AS Roma in 1991, and just a few months later, their current manager – Filippo Inzaghi – made his professional debut as an 18-year-old newbie for Piacenza.
The former AC Milan and Italian national team striker has been credited for leading Pisa back to Serie A, and under his guidance, the Nerazzurri aim to prove they belong next term, despite the unfavorable super-early preseason SBOTOP Serie A 2025 odds.
Pisa’s complicated past and new beginnings

Pisa established themselves as one of the top teams in Italy between the 1980s and early 1990s. Under head coach Romeo Anconetani, the Nerazzurri played in six Serie A campaigns between 1982-83 and 1990-91. Pisa also won the Mitropa Cup twice – a continental tournament for central European clubs that was discontinued in 1992.
Pisa’s return to Italian top-flight football in 1982 was just their second campaign after a brief appearance in 1968-69, where they finished 11th in the standings – their best finish in Serie A at the time.
However, after their relegation in 1990-91, Pisa went on a steep decline. The Nerazzurri eventually dropped to Serie C and ceased operations because they ran out of money. After a short hiatus, Pisa were reformed in 1994 and were placed in Serie D before they worked their way back up to Serie B in 2007.
Just two years later, Pisa were relegated again, which led to more financial woes and exclusion from the Italian Football Federation. The Nerazzurri were reformed again and took their place in Serie D for the 2009-10 campaign.
Pisa have jumped in and out of the third and second tiers in the next few years but finally settled in Serie B since 2019. They finished in 13th place last season, only three points above the relegation zone, and the club replaced Alberto Aquilani with Filippo Inzaghi, who turned Pisa’s fortunes around this season.
Pisa confirmed their return to top-flight football three weeks ago with a 1-0 win over Frosinone, as Henrik Meister came off the bench to score the marginal goal. They capped off their 2024-25 campaign with a 2-1 win over Cremonese last week.
The standout stars for Pisa
Pisa have several players that can make new Serie A 2025 highlights next season. Matteo Tramoni is arguably the team’s most versatile player, as he can play in the middle of the park or at the wings. He just turned 25, so he has a bright future ahead of him. Tramoni was the Nerazzurri’s top scorer with 13 league goals and three assists this year.
Tramoni returned from a torn ACL that restricted him to only seven games at the tail end of the 2023-24 season. He is the team’s most influential player, as the Nerazzurri couldn’t score enough goals when he’s not on the pitch.
Stefano Moreo and Alexander Lind support Tramoni with 15 league goals and nine assists this term. Moreo has vast experience in Italian football, having played over 250 Serie B games in his career, and the 31-year-old striker will be eager to play his first Serie A match next season. At 6’3″, Moreo is an aerial threat in front of goal. He ranks fourth in aerial duels won (3.8 per game) and leads Serie B in flick-ons per game (4.2).
How long will Inzaghi’s golden touch last?
Filippo Inzaghi once brought Salernitana back to Serie A but ultimately failed to stay there, so he faces a new challenge to avoid the same fate with Pisa next season. With his brother Simone in the Italian top-flight, the games between Pisa and Inter Milan are must-watch family affairs.
Pisa (under Inzaghi) aren’t known for dominating possession since they ranked third from the bottom in Serie B for completed passes and average possession percentage. However, they make up for it with their intensity on the press and clinical edge in the final third.
The Arena Garibaldi – Pisa’s home pitch since 1919 – is a 25,000-capacity stadium and a stone’s throw away from the famous Leaning Tower. With Inzaghi in charge, the place will be rocking after a 34-year wait.
